The Park preserves the outstanding volcanic landscape of the upper slopes of Haleakala on the island of Maui and protects the unique and fragile ecosystems of Kipahulu Valley, the scenic pools along Oheo Gulch, and many rare and endangered species. Haleakala, originally part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, was redesignated as a separate entity in July 1961. Haleakala National Park was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980. Of its 28,655 acres, 19,270 are wilderness

DIRECTIONS: Haleakala National Park extends from the 10,023 foot summit of Haleakala down the southeast flank of the mountain to the Kipahulu coast near Hana. These two sections of the Park are not directly connected by road, but both can be reached from Kahului. The Summit area of Haleakala is a three hour round trip drive from Kahului via roads 37, 377, and 378. Follow the signs posted along the Highway. The Kipahulu area of the Park is at the east end of Maui between Hana and Kaupa. It can be reached via Highway 36, a curvy, often wet road. Kipahulu is about 90 miles from the resort areas of Wailea or Kaanapali, and 60 miles from central Maui. Driving time is about 3-4 hours each way. An extension of this road, Highway 31, goes around the dry side of the island, past Kaupa and on to Ulapalakua. It is only partially paved and can be hazardous or closed during periods of stormy weather.

Iao Valley State Park Location: End of Iao Valley Road, Highway 32, Wailuku, Maui, Wailuku Facts: The first thing you will notice when you arrive at Iao Valley State Park is the interesting and sharp formation of the Iao Needle. The Iao Valley Road is one of the biggest Maui attractions and many tours can take you there. Back in 1790 the park was witnessing a large battle of Kamehameha I, whose mission was to unite all Hawaiian Islands.

Piilanihale Heiau Location: Near Hana Beach Park. The Piilanihale Heiau is actually part of the Kahanu Garden. The heiau is a National Historic Landmark and is believed to be the largest ancient temple, not only in Hawaii but in all of Polynesia. This is Hawaii's largest, ancient place of worship that is still intact. It dates back to the 14th century and is associated with Maui's Pi'ilani dynasty. The area was overgrown until the 1970's which kept the site a secret and therefore in excellent condition. The stone platform is 340 feet by 415 feet. It covers almost three acres!

Seven Sacred Pools Location: S. Hana Hwy, South Maui Facts: The Seven Sacred Pools are also known as the Oheo Gulch. These pools are located on the back road to the road to Hana and are a popular visitor attractions. Located near the Oheo Gulch is a historical site with a heiau.

Bellstone Location: Mile marker 16, Highway 340 Facts: It is called Bellstone, because it looks like a stone, in fact it is a large round rock and if you hit the right side of it with a small rock you will hear a sound resembling a bell. You will see that many people did that before you because the stone has some marks on it.

Black Rock - "Pu'u Keka'a" Ka'anapali Beach, Highway 340 West Maui Black Rock is the site where ancient Hawaiians believed that their spirits "jumped off" or left this world. Each island has such a spot. It was believed that a spirit left this world to join it ancestors. If there were no ancestors to greet the spirit, it would wander the earth causing mischief.
Black Rock divides the beautiful beaches of Ka'anapali and Kahekili. Resorts line the coast but there are several public beach accesses available. This area is the site of one of the last volcanic eruptions on Maui. Snorkeling and scuba diving is especially good in this area as Black Rock forms a great reef wall. Locals are often seen diving into the deep waters around the rock.

Nakalele Point and Blowhole Highway 30, West Maui The drive from Kapalu around Nakalele Point and on to Wailuku is extraordinary. After passing the pineapple fields of Kapalua, you will see the famous surfing spot, Honolua Bay and then Honokolau Valley. Nakalele Point and light beacon is immediately after the valley.
Hike down the hill to the magnificent blowhole below the beacon. The blowhole is the result of the ocean wearing away the shore below the lava shelf. With each wave, water is forced through a hole in the lava shelf resulting in the "eruption" of water similar to a geyser. The "blowing" of the water varies dramatically depending on tide levels and wave action. High tide and strong surf result in the best effects.

Halekii-Pihana State Monuments Haleki'i and Pihanakalani Heiau are two of Maui's most accessible archeological sites. The lava foundation is the remains of a heiau, or Hawaiian temple. On rare occasions, some of these temples were used to perform human sacrifices of the halihinis (commoners). It is thought that Pihanakalani Heiau is probably the last site where Kamehameha I performed such sacrifices on Maui.

La Perouse Bay makes up part of the Ahihi-Kina'u Natural Area Preserve. Located at the very end of Makena Alanui Road in South Maui, this lava strewn, alien looking landscape is the result of the last volcanic eruption here. When the ocean is calm, snorkeling is excellent in this area due the rocky reef. However, the trade winds frequently keep the waters choppy and churned up, especially later in the day. In ancient times the area was known as a site where Huaka'i po, 'Night Marchers, roamed. These are restless spirits who are trapped on earth causing mischief at night. Every island has its tales about sightings of Night Marchers.

Wai'anapanapa State Park Highway 360, Hana 808-244-4354 This 122-acre state park encompasses a lovely black sand beach, dramatic sea caves, natural stone arch, campground, hiking trails, and remnants of the first road built around the island, the old King's Highway.
The black-sand beach is lovely but dangerous for swimming due to strong currents and a rocky reef. Black sand is the result of lava flowing into the ocean and shattering when it comes in contact with the cool water. The volcanic pieces are then smashed against each other and the shoreline with each wave, thus creating the black sand. There is a stone bridge, and, a short hike away, the huge smooth volcanic tubes or caves.
